Speculative Geologies contemplates the rare earth minerals that generate the “magic” of our smartphones. For most of us, it is a mystery how mined materials are transformed into these complex, networked devices. We tried to imagine if each individual smartphone action/function could be traced back to a single rock or mineral. For instance, a rock or mineral that coordinates ride-shares or a rock/mineral that radiates moral ambiguity.

Jason Urban and Leslie Mutchler (JULMstudios) are collaborators who live and work in Brooklyn, New York. Their practice is increasingly about the natural world and the way digital technologies influence and distort our relationship to nature. Their print-based installations have been shown at national and international venues; most recently at Eastern Edge (Canada), Center for Book Arts (NYC), NARS Foundation (Brooklyn, NY), and Monaco (St. Louis, MO)
